AFRO-LATINO DANCE FUSION AND IMPROVISATION

A dance journey inspired by Latin-American, African, and African diasporic rhythms and movements.

DESCRIPTION

IN THIS 4-HOUR DANCE CLASS YOU WILL DIVE INTO DIFFERENT MOVEMENTS INSPIRED BY LATIN-AMERICAN, AFRICAN, AND AFRICAN DIASPORIC TRADITIONAL AND URBAN DANCES.

About the Workshop

The objective of this dance class is to introduce you to a variety of dance steps and techniques inspired by Latin-American, African, and African diasporic rhythms and movements - mainly by traditional and urban dances from Cuba, Guinea, Brazil, and Bolivia. These dance styles are very polyrhythmic and deeply connected to the music.

In this class, similarities and differences that exist between the various styles will be identified. You are encouraged to interpret the movements in a way that feels natural and healthy to your body.

This experience will provide you with tools that will allow you to:

  • Expand your knowledge
  • Increase your movement repertoire
  • Connect with your essence
  • Improve coordination, listening, and improvisation skills
  • and, of course, sweat, work-out and have fun!

CLASS AGENDA

  • Start with a warm-up (related to the dance steps you will learn)
  • Introduce techniques that allow individualization of the different body parts
  • Learn dance moves and combine them into a choreography
  • Improvisation and rhythm exercises
  • General review of the choreography with everything we have learned

This workshop is for teenagers and adults at a beginner or intermediate level.

A GLIMPSE INTO THE DANCE STYLE

About the teacher

Sabina Celeste

I grew up in Bolivia. From an early age, I liked music and dance. I even participated a few times in the world famous Carnaval de Oruro dancing Caporales. In New Mexico, USA, a whole world opened up to me as I was introduced to Capoeira, where percussion, song and dance merge to create a wonderful art that tells part of Brazil’s fascinating history. Later, in California, I immersed myself in the search for new Latin-American, African, and African Diasporic movements and sounds. I took dance and percussion classes and workshops in different states and at University. I traveled to Cuba, Guinea, Senegal, and Peru to temporarily immerse myself in these wonderful cultures. Under the name Estampa-Fusion of Sound and Movement, I started organizing workshops for the community by inviting master dance teachers. With respect to the cultures that opened their doors to me and inspired by all the genres I have been influenced by, I started teaching regular dance and percussion classes. I have taught in California (USA), Lusaka (Zambia), La Paz (Bolivia), online, and in Berlin: the wonderful city in which I live now.
