Javiera González Zarzar
(Chile)
Javiera González Zarzar (b. 1984, Santiago) is an architect and emerging artist. She teaches architecture at the Universidad Gabriela Mistral in Santiago and is pursuing her doctorate at the Technische Universität Berlin. A former German Academic Exchange Service scholarship recipient, she has been living in Berlin since 2016. Javiera's artistic practice began in Berlin, where her work is influenced by her background in architecture. She has participated in solo and group exhibitions in Berlin and South Korea.
ABOUT THE WORK
Growing up within the Palestinian community in Chile, known for its rich tradition in textile production, I developed an early interest in crafting with textiles, often utilizing materials found in my household. My architectural studies further sparked my fascination with modern art and the integration of art and architecture. In my practice, I focus on using color and contrasting materials to create a tactile, three-dimensional aesthetic. I work primarily within the field of fiber art, incorporating elements of optical art to enhance the visual and sensory experience. My works merge the aesthetic experiences of both optical and textile art, striving to create pieces that engage viewers through their dynamic interplay of materials and form.

This work continues the main line of experimentation with color and the use of contrasting materials to create a tactile and three-dimensional aesthetic, blending the aesthetic experiences of optical art with textile art. In this piece, the interaction between violet and blue creates the sensation of a sequence of square shadows or reflections. This establishes an aesthetic framework to position the textile piece, supported by elements of varying dimensions, so that it appears suspended from the background.

As an architect, I began investigating the window as a device that links body and landscape. This work is part of a series that explores different ways to create depth: through the layering of acrylic-painted layers and the embroidery of colors that constantly change. In this piece, depth is the medium for representing temporality, and the window is no longer a static object. There are two temporalities in the work: one in which the window has been decomposed and dematerialized into various photomontages, as a representation of different reflections as moments of light. The second is a diffused landscape shown as a static point, whose temporality is portrayed through the changing colors.
One Hundred and Sixty Hours of Interaction Between Two Layers in Red and Blue

This suspended piece is made of two layers of fiberglass mesh. Each mesh is independent, but its interest lies in their interaction. The work was created without a preconceived composition, but rather through the addition of embroidery patterns. After creating one pattern, it was decided which pattern to add to the other layer. The piece is a sum of patterns that resonate with their complementary reverse. Through this exercise, the work can be seen as a three-dimensional pattern sampler, and like any sampler, it functions as a tool for testing and reflection. The interaction between the two layers creates a vibrant visual experience, where the body must move around it to perceive the haptic and tactile effect of the wool and thread.
